Our music program continues to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the students at SCCS. Rebecca DeVries is choosing to focus on her church worship role at Covenant CRC. As a result, Jill Friend will be returning to teach choir at SCCS. Listed below is the structure of music offerings for grades 7-8 next year. We ask that you fill out the form below informing us of your son/daughter’s choices for the 2020-21 school year by Thursday, August 20th. If we have not received a reply by the 20th, the music teachers will place your child in an ensemble best suited for their needs.
What is offered?
Band, orchestra and choir, are electives. Students can choose to participate in one, two, or all three ensembles.
General music is required of any student not participating in a music elective.
When are the classes?
Band and orchestra will be meeting 6th period on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Choir and general music will be meeting 6th period on Wednesdays and Fridays.
What are my options?
All students are encouraged to join choir.
If your child intends to participate in the musical, they must be enrolled in choir for the school year.
For those students who are not participating in band or orchestra, they will be choosing between choir or general music on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Band and orchestra students will have the option of choosing a study hall instead of general music/choir.
Students participating in all three ensembles will still have an option for a daily 20 minute study hall.
All classes operate on year long participation.
What will choir look like?
Choir will meet in the band and orchestra rooms and separated by gender.
Until informed otherwise, choir will meet in a physically distant environment and prepare music
Currently, no fall concert performances have been planned. Alternative performances are being developed.
Spring concert performances will be reevaluated in October/November.
What will general music look like?
General music will be an online course developed by the music teachers and supervised by the student's homeroom teacher.
This course will be graded like all other subject areas.
If the student uses their time properly, the work involved will be able to be finished in class.
